It seems like Vitamin D is the new thing to be thinking about. My doctor tested me for it a couple weeks ago, which I have never had done before, and while I was waiting for my results it came up in conversation numerous times. I didn't get tested for any other vitamins so what's the big deal about this one?

It turns out I am so Vitamin D-ficient (get it?!?) that she put me on a prescription! I have to take one mega-pill a week for ten weeks and get retested. Then I can go on a normal drugstore variety if my levels are up to snuff. I wonder if it is the answer to my problems: Vitamin D.

Curtis and I had a Burien/White Center adventure on Saturday for Mexican food, Dairy Queen, and the best thrift store scores I've made in a long time: Fire King, Pyrex and Hazel Atlas pieces (the milk glass triumvirate); an Expo 86 commemorative plate (I attended when I was a kid); a sexy business woman Versace skirt for $5; cute basic black Hush Puppies flats for $4; a beautiful pink vintage slip with great kickpleats; and a funny mustard jar that is shaped like a clock. Now I just have to find a place for all these kitchenwares. I need to take some pictures but it's not quite light enough yet by the time I get home.

I wonder if vitamin D deficiency is common in Seattle because the winters are so dreary. People with darker skin are often deficient because the extra melanin blocks absorbtion, or something, but now that everyone is so dilligent about sunscreen it is becoming a problem for white people too.

Yeah, my doctor always tries to remind me about it too. Bryan has been taking extra D for a year or so now and he claims it makes him feel much better.

You get vitamin D from going in the sun 'cause your body makes its own when there's UV light around--I think it's actually the only vitamin humans can synthesize. But no sun = no uv = no vitamin D, so folks up north need to get it from food or pills.

I started taking it when I moved to the West Coast and have taken it ever since. It does make a difference. I also have a light box for SAD. I swear by this light box and would really recommend it.

I could totally see that living in Seattle. Even being in Reno I bought a special sunlamp to deal with winter, especially when it was really snowy and grey out.

Actually, I went through a whole bunch of tests right after I left Seattle for thyroid & depression. The final conclusion was that I was anemic, so I got put on iron supplements and BCP until my levels (and moods) stabilized.

The 86 Expo was the Vancouver one, right? 84 was New Orleans, which we all went to and most Louisiana cars had license places commemorating it, even years after (because the state had TOO many). I spose I should just google that. They turned the Expo site into a mall, which is still there.

I remember the post-NOLA expo was gonna happen somewhere REAL FAR AWAY, basically halfway around the world, in the Northwest corner of the US. Or somewhere like that.
